I am new to this forum, and I am looking for some information about buying a 2018/2019 F-150 XLT with a 2.7 engine and 10 speed transmission with 3.55 rear end. I would like to know anything about the 2.7 engine compared to the 3.5 engine in this truck. I plan to do any/some towing (Less than 7000lb.) once in a great while. What other things do I need to know about the 2.7 engine? What are any of the problems that have materialized?
Any information would be Greatly Appreciated.
Infrequent under 7000lb towing will be just fine with that combo.
I just completed a week with a dump trailer up to about 6000 lbs. No power issues, but you know the trailer is there. ('17 SC, 2.7, 6 speed, 3.55s)
The 2.7 was upgraded in '18, and sports 400 lb/ft vs.my '17s 375. It also gained port EFI in addition to DI, so you'll sleep better at night knowing the backs of your valves get a regular shower.
There were some issues earlier. All handled under warranty and I don't recall anyone with issues in the latest model years.
That's the perfect drive train for a daily driver that does some occasional towing. You'll love it, and they've been quite reliable (all engines have issues, there were some issues that were addressed, mainly on the earlier gen of the 2.7L EB).
It's a great engine and I'm highly considering it for my next truck. There were some oil pan issues for very early builds and a few trucks with stalling issues after pulling heavy loads for long highway runs. Otherwise it seems very well build.
Keep in mind, 7k is about the high limit of towing capacity of the 2.7 w/3.55s per the towing guide. The 2.7 will also need the trailer tow package to tow above 5k as stated in the manual.
My wife's truck is a 2.7. Great motor, great mileage. It's not a workhorse, but it'll do quite a bit if you understand its limitations.
If I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO, I could use it to get our ultra-light travel trailer home - but there would have to be a long series of events take place to put me in that situation.
Both engines are very solid but since you’re considering a used vehicle, why not just go with the 3.5.
Yes, based on what you mentioned, the 2.7 will be perfect for your needs but, more HP &TQ is never a bad thing and when or if you want to tow or haul more, you’ll be ready to go.
I've been very happy with my 2.7L (although with the 6R80). I've towed camper trailers, flat bed trailer, and enclosed trailers with no trouble. It honestly feels like there's nothing back there most of the time. Your gas tank feels it more than anything.
I tow an 18' boat quite often and a 30 TT that weighs about 6k loaded with a 19 2.7 and 3:55s. No power issues at all. 12-13mpg pulling the camper 16-18mpg pulling the boat and 22-24mpg average running dry in highway and city mix. It's a great combination and not been to the dealer for anything in 22,000 miles.
There's one on another forum with 458,000 miles. Aside from normal maintenance the only parts replaced are the purge solenoid valve @ 338K miles and the water pump @ 437K miles. https://www.f150forum.com/f118/100-0...-2-7-a-389552/
