School me on rear diff seal replacement.

I have a 2015 F150 and took it from my dealer for some service items last week. Of course they inspected the truck and recommended replacing the seal on the rear differential. This being the seal on the cover plate. He said it falls under the five-year powertrain warranty and I had Several days until this labs and they could do it for free. So even though it just looks slightly wet and I’ve never had a drop on the floor I let them schedule me to have it done.
Warranty still covers this and they could do it for free. So even though it just looks slightly wet and I’ve never had a drop on the floor I let them schedule me to have it done

So I drop it off today and she informed me this would take several hours to do. So I really don’t care how long it does take but wondering why it would take a couple hours. Isn’t this something as simple as putting it up on the rack, removing 10 or 12 bolts, drain out the old fluid, replace the seal and cover plate and refill with fluid. So this takes several hours to do? I must be missing something. Is there more to it than this?

This is gasket on inspection plate at rear and not pinion seal.

They are probably letting it cure some before putting in the fluid and/or they have over scheduled and they'll be working your truck in.

Thats a lot of work to do (cleaning the old RTV takes the longest) and once you install and let tack and torque it could be a multi hour job. There is no gasket on the differential cover its all RTV.

Tks for the info guys. I didn’t realize there was RTV and not a simple gasket. And they just called and they’re finished. Not for a bicycle ride back to the dealer.
