rear differential front seal replacement.

have a 200 expedition and the front differential seal is leaking. this is where the drive shaft goes into the diff. 60,000 miles on vehicle.

are these things easy to replace? my dealership said it would be about $175 to replace (~20 for the seal and 1.5 hours of work).

does this sound correct? any other ways to get it replaced?

thanks!

sounds like a fair price to me. a honest dealer for once. better keep them. the seal where the cv joint goes into the diff is not hard just time consuming. if you are not up to it 175.00 is pretty fair.

My 99EB 2WD (101,000 miles) goes into the shop tomorrow for the exact same problem, rear differential leaking pinion yoke seal. They quoted me $140. I'm wondering if changing the rear differential fluid about 10k miles ago had anything to do with it ???

it is the front seal on the rear differential where the driveshaft connects to the rear differential.

this rear differential supports the rear wheels.

this seal is facing towards the front of the vehicle and located on the rear differential.

i guess i assumed that with a 4wd there are two differentials. sorry for the confusion and i hope this makes sense now.
