Hi, Im new to the forum but read thru alot of this stuff when having problems. I've got a 99 f250 super duty 7.3 powerstroke. My truck has been sitting for over a year. Decided to try to get it up and running. Among the things I have done to it, I replaced the hpop, ipr, icp, both pigtails, did the oil change, new filter...the truck started and it drove good. Get back home and as it sits and idle I see oil pouring on the ground. It is still coming from hpop somewhere...can't really tell from where. Have to take fuel housing off to see anything really so can't really pinpoint the area. Not coming from the fittings, cant see anywhere that looks bad on hpop. Any ideas? And could the bolt that holds to the crank cause it if it isn't tightened enough? I'm a girl working on this without any help so was wondering if I possibly didn't get it tight enough and if that could be the problem...Could really use any and all advice
Welcome - let's see if we can figure this one out. Gotta get that oil leak identified. What prompted you to replace the hpop? Usually that's a pretty reliable part. How about the other replacements - did you have codes, no start, or rough running?
About how many miles on the rig? If you can post some pictures of what you are looking at - where the leak might be coming from, or where you see oil dripping, that might help.
Check if the oil leak is from where the dipstick tube enters the oil pan. Known problem.
Also if the oil flow is like frikken huge it could be a blown HPOP line. It happens with age. If that is the problem the truck will lose so much oil it will not run pretty doggone soon.
Clean up best ya can and get after the source. Oil leaks are common on the top of the engine, and they flow back thru the valley to a hole at the back, where it flows down to be mistaken for a rear main seal leak.
First off, clean out the valley with Simple Green and a gentle stream of hot water. Then fire up the truck and observe where the oil is coming from. If it is the HPOP as you suspect and it's coming from under the fuel bowl, it could be the gasket that between the HPOP and the reservoir. Did you replace that gasket when you replaced the HPOP? If so, did you make sure it stayed in place as you bolted the HPOP back on?
Thanks guys for all the responses. I originally replaced the hpop because it blew out one of the lines. So have already been there...and dead on the side of the road. I can't see that any of the oil is coming out around the lines and fittings. Threads were good and I also put thread seal on them before installing back in the truck. I do know that the oil is coming from up top...it does come out at the bottom but there is quite a bit of oil in the valley so I know that's where its coming from. Also I was under the truck for about 15 min while letting it idle and nothing but the valley had plenty there. I can't see where its coming from exactly but pretty sure its not the lines or fittings. I figured when it blew the lines it had something to do with some sort of pressure sensor which is why I replaced the ipr and pigtail, and also the icp sensor and pigtail. I can see all the oil in the valley but cant tell where its coming from with the fuel housing on so Ive taken it off, which in turn I cant start the truck. Im new to the thread..but will try to figure out a way to upload pics
So your next step is to clean the valley again. Sorry. Then stuff paper towels in it. Fill it up with wads, like a pack rat would, but use no more than 2 sheets per wad. Then run the truck for a few minutes. Then take off the intercooler pipes and dig into the valley until you find the paper towels with the oil on them. Then report back here with results. Pictures help immensely, but if it's all at the back passenger side or all at the front drivers side, or middle left or right we'll be able to point you in the right direction for the fix
Its isnt the fuel line. It is still in. I didnt remove it except to loosen from the fuel bowl itself, as for bracket, possibly. I did manage to get it all cleaned up today. Everything back on and paper towels all down in the valley, also around the fittings at both ends. Was starting to get my batteries hooked back up when it started storming and it has not quit. We are under tornado watch here and looks like its supposed to storm all day tomorrow. If it does take a break, I will get the batteries hooked up and start and let it run long enough to hopefully pinpoint the leak. Will post back soon as I do. Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. Hope to have some results tomorrow.
Also I did put a clump of paper towel in each of the holes as well to make sure Im not losing any fluids out of there when I start the truck back up. I did check them after I first started the truck after replacing the hpop just to make sure nothing was coming out of them and never saw anything leakimg but want to make extra sure this time around.
Can you tell me if anything belongs in those 2 empty bolt holes or are they just there for bolts to place clamps and lines out of the way
I made it out to check under the hood tonight. The small dirty hole is for the fuel line bracket (which just wears a hole in the fuel line so no need for it).
The larger clean hole is for the engine hanger bracket. Should be 2 of those holes. And I’m assuming you took it off to work on the HPOP?
Here’s a photo of mine for reference.
Edit: sorry, photo posted sideways for some reason. It was right on my phone. Lol.
