I have a 78 f150 with a 400. I recently replaced the radiator, hoses, and thermostat. Now when I drive at highway speeds and get back home I have coolant coming out somewhere around the water pump. Using the truck around the farm we have no issues at all. Only after driving 60 mph plus and then shutting the truck off. Do I need to just replace the water pump or is there something else going on I dont know about. Any advice would be appreciated.
Did you do a full flush before putting new fluid in? If not may have knocked junk loose and got sucked into pump and blew the gasket or even the seal at the bearing. Also when going that far as replacing almost the whole circulation system mine as well replace the 40$ water pump too. With all new parts that are not plugged at all, the pressure may have blown it. I would replace the pump make sure the system is clean amd if still worried you can do a pressure test
I agree with you, the whole time I was doing the work I could hear Dad saying " if ain't broke dont fix it". I did do a flush but may not have got all the trash out. It probably is the water pump, it just didnt make sense to me why we run it on the farm and down backroads and not have any leaks. Thanks for the reply...
Thats the thing to me backroads and on the ranch to me is 5-25mph max. Highway 55-60mph means more pressure and water pump pulley spinning at higher rpms.for a longer period pf time. I would start there and even pressure test to make sure, most parts houses have loaner tools. You could borrow a pressure tester the same time you buy the pump to be super safe
I will try that and see if it fixes the problem. I apologize for the multiple posts. Didnt see where I could delete the other threads. Thanks again for the advice.
