Towing

Hello!
I will be bringing from California to Missouri a 1960 F100, I plan on using a Uhaul type car dolly. My question is will the transmission be lubricated while towing since the force will be from the rear rather than the front?

Since you are towing for a relatively long distance, I would consider unbolting the driveshaft from the third member. The driveshaft can be left in the truck. Just secure the loose end with some cheap bailing wire or a few bungee cords. Wrap the universal joint with some tape and you should be ready to go. Checking the fluid level in the rearend might be a good idea as well.

Thanks for the advice, that’s what my brother said but wanted a second opinion.

If it is an automatic disconnect shaft. If stick it should be towable in neutral. Make sure oil in trans and rear axle.

It’s a stick and I will check fluid levels. My brother was concerned that the trans wouldn’t be lubricated like it should. Something about the gear that moves the oil wouldn’t spin like it would when the power is coming from the engine. When towing the power is coming from the rear wheels. He thinks it will but not sure.

I would tow a stick trans a short distance but not as far as you are going. Be safe and disconnect the drive shaft, a few minutes work is cheaper then building a new trans.

I agree with Hiball 100% but I would remove the driveline completely and store it in the bed of the truck along with the ubolts so nothing can go wrong on the long journey (vibrate loose). Safe travels!

If you remove the drive shaft completely then transmission fluid will pour out of the tail shaft housing. Not a good idea!
If you unbolt it and tie it up the fluid won’t pour out although you must be extra diligent! Don’t rely on one tie down and put something through the front u-joint and tie it to the transmission so it doesn’t fall out from inertia.
