Yep Ive done that before as well. But if a rebuild is needed have to ask yourself if you want to go back OE or do you want to make improvements.
That, and the "might as well replace _______ while I'm in there" infection. Can get spendy real fast. Start measuring stuff, dimensions and wear limits on anything, it will most likely be out of spec. Back then people were satisfied if it didn't burn too much oil and started up easy I suppose.

Yep most were long as it runs ill send it. Me I am going all new as much as I can as I already put a engine in this truck due to neglect already once back in 92/93 when we got the truck. now the balancer took out the crank so I want to get the same length of time if not more out of the new engine I drop in. I also told myself while im at it now, guess ill do what I plan, headers, nice aftermarket stock like exhaust, and gut the emissions and put more goodies in the engine, that's why my 306 when I drop it in my truck will be pushing right at $10,000 in parts alone since I now decided to go holley sniper stealth fuel injection which added another $1800 to my bill.
Why I always stress to people when it comes to engines, how far do you want to go cause you can quickly get into crate motor pricing.
For future readers another thing I have found that helps tremendously when freeing a stuck engine is removing the distributor and using a drill motor to turn the oil pump shaft at least long enough to get everything nice and wet with oil. Between that and putting your choice of the above concoctions in each cylinder you will have it turning freely in no time!
