I have a 1982 f100 with a 4.9l and a 4sp manual. I noticed that when I'm going slow i.e pulling through my neighborhood, I hear I knocking sound. When I pull it out of gear, the sound stops. I initially thought it was the front suspension, but it stops when I put it in neutral. Any ideas?
What 4sp do you have?
In gear you must be moving, how fast and what gear you in?
If in gear and not moving, clutch pushed in, would think something up with clutch assy.
Dave ----
I would check the u-joints in the driveshaft for play. Make sure it's out of gear and the wheels are chocked with chunks of wood or something, so you can wiggle the shaft around. You can't check it if it's in gear and holding the truck from rolling.

I have no idea which 4spd it is. It's not the original 4speed but I believe it's the factory one. And it's in gear going 10-20mph. It gets faster as the truck accelerates .

Is first gear a very low gear we call granny gear and hardly use it or 4th an over drive gear and lowers the RPM for high way use?
Dave ----
First gear is usable and yes, 4th is overdrive for highway use.
Ok so it sounds like you have a SROD (single rod over drive) transmission they sometimes call it a 3sp with overdrive.
I have a T18 granny first and it has issues and will click when in granny gear, think chipped gear?
Also when under power in high gear you can hear a clicking noise from inside the transmission think it is the input shaft bearing.
I have had the shift tower off, yours does not have this, to re-seal and could see some of the gears are hurting.
For me I was able to find a used transmission for the cost of a rebuild kit less the needed gears.
I have yet to install it yet waiting for other parts before I swap the transmissions.
So maybe if not to much work you can pull the pan on the tunnel and go for a ride to see if you can hear better where the noise is coming from.
Dave ----
ps have you checked the oil level in the transmission?

Ok I put everything together so we kind of know what the full story is but ........ what gear is this in when going 10 - 20 MPH and do you know the RPM?
Does this happen in every gear or just the 1 gear?
You would not know what rear axle gear ratio you have would you?
Does this happen under power, not power but not slowing using the motor and when slowing using the motor?
Do check the Ujoints and the transmission oil level.

Sorry for not being able to explain this any better.
So yes, it is a three-speed with overdrive, and this is supposedly a "new" transmission that was replaced in the 80s by my father. It allegedly had 3000 or so miles on it before we got it running again. The truck has sat up until last year.
It happens in first and second. I don't know if it happens in third or overdrive since the engine is too loud and I can't hear it. It happens both in and out of power and slowing using the motor. When it is in neutral, the knocking stops. It seems to happen at any RPM, though I never go above 3,000RPM and I cant hear the transmission past 2,000RPM so from idle to about 2,000 RPM seems to be where I am noticing this knock.
I don't know what the rear gear ratio is, unfortunately. But the model of truck is 1982 F-100 4.9l XL with the SRO 3spw/OD.
Thank you for the time and effort, I really appreciate the information and knowledge!
I would check the oil level in the trans as a start.
It could be that from sitting, how many years?, the gears or bearings got some rust on them and now making noise?
Why is the motor making so much noise you cant hear the trans?
I think if I could not pin point the noise I would get the rear wheels off the ground and supported good.
Start the truck and put it in gear and let it idle so it will make the noise and get under and see if you can tell just where the noise is coming from.
If it is the transmission you can either keep driving it, get another or have it rebuilt again.
Trying to help find a noise from a truck when on line is really hard as we can not hear it or just where it is coming from.
Did you check the Ujoints? Sometimes they make a chirping noise and get faster the faster you go. They can also make a clicking noise and vibrate under load when bad.

Its been sitting for around 20 years. The motor is fine, its just loud, and the noise in the cab is loud (weatherstripping and sound reading need to be put in there) And I will definitely check the fluid level. I did check the UJoints and there was no play in either of them. I'll raise the back wheels and get the transmission to make that noise again. Ill report back when I find something.

I feel pretty stupid. There is a been in the bed that touches the cab. It was that hitting the cab making that noise. In the process I changed the trans oil, added octane booster to this tank of gas and reset the timing.
