Does anyone have a source for the automatic shift lever (on the column) for the 72-77 trucks? I cannot find one to save my life. I am trying to find a good photo of one so I can see how much the engagement tab on mine is worn and if I need to replace it. this thing will shift well when I am done with it come hell or high water!! ha!
Don't know if this will be clear enough to help you. This is one that I took a picture of after I got it back from the rechromers. I'll see if I have a better picture.
Here are a couple of more, again, don't know if they're clear enough to help.
In both pictures, the lower gear shift is a brand new NOS replacement from Ford.
That's super helpful Mike! I was trying to get an idea of what that engagement "tooth" profile looked like from the factory. Mine is rounded off on the edges, but I was worried that step down notch was not factory. ha!
Anyhow I put it back together today with a new lockout plate and it seems to be much better. The NSS actually works without being lifting on the shifter every time (I had run out of adjustment room) and it seems to actually stay in park now. Much better, but it's still a little mealy mouthed... like there's some extra thick grease somewhere in the works. I cleaned the top of the shift tube and all of the collar areas, pulled the springs out of the collar, cleaned and replaced, replaced the rubber bushing on the shifter handle. Any thoughts on where to check next? I suppose the bushings on the linkage is the next thing to do. There's no moving parts in the bottom of the steering column right?
One thing you might want to check is wear in the manual selector lever (that's what Ford calls the arm on the transmission) and the stud that connects the arm to the shift rod.
thanks Mike. Looking at a diagram, it looks like there is a spring down at the bottom of the collar too. I was trying not to pull the column out of the truck, but since there's a borgeson shaft kit and steel bottom bearing in the new parts bin... I suppose I might as well go on and do it. While I do, I'll tear apart that shift linkage and inspect everything there as well.
Thanks for the parts picture. We are looking for Selector lever Assembly or just the Automatic column shift lever. Found a couple used on Ebay but haven't found any new in my search. CJ Pony has for 72 but **** area is different. We have a 74 Ford F250 4x4 automatic highboy under construction.
