You need that support mount on the main cap. If it's just hanging way out there with no support, the tube will eventually develop a crack up near the pump.
I have never figured out the 5 qt/6qt thing. I swapped in a 351w out of a 79 cougar in my old truck, had to make my own dipstick, and set it up for 5 quarts. Ran it for several years like that, no problems. I then read on here that the trucks used 6 qts. Oh, I didn't know that. So the next oil change I put 6 quarts in it. Go down the road and I see smoke pouring out the back. Get out and look and oil is dripping out of the back of the engine. Turned out to be the rear main seal. Only thing changed was the added quart of oil. Took a quart out, and the leak went away and I drove it for years after that with no problems. I have never figured out what that was all about.
