Alright, I dropped the inner flange for the dipstick into the oil pan of my 1999 F-350...Im sure I can rig up something to get it back up into position. What I was wondering is this, Do I have to pull the Motor to get the pan off or can I drop the pan just enough to retrieve the Flange? Thanks
To take the pan off you will have to pull the motor. I have seen people cut the pan and tack it back into place... but thats a little too redneck for me!
The thing about dropping the pan enough to get it out is that the pan is sealed with silicone. You may never get all the silicone off or get it on good for a good seal.
Drain the oil and go fishing.Listen and work slowly. You can fish them out.I have read about this happening.
Did you not have it secured with a safety?I used a 50 cal bore brush when I changed mine....Good luck
OH.....Welcome to FTE
I know fishing is really the only option. I have the opening secured temporarilly for now with some aluminum can material and RTV. Will I do any damge to anything if I drive on it till the weekend? It isnt leaking and the Dip stick is in place and is giving what appears to be accurate readings.
I know it is probably your daily truck. You would think it would stay in the sump but anything can happen I guess.Hopefully it stays put until you can get it back in place.
I'm not sure I'd trust a tin can and some RTV to seal things up for driving around. A couple of options I've seen in the past is using a strong magnet below the pan to pull the part to a certain location to make fishing easier. Another is a guy who bought one of those snake cameras at home depot. He drained the oil, stuck the little camera up the drain hole and watched as he hooked the part.
If you do have to pull the pan, make sure to get a tube or two of the International sealant. Some silicones can react with the oil and foam really bad.
