8BA oil pan

My 53 f100 flathead 239 has an oil pan with NO clean out plate. It's drain plug is at the back.

I would like to put on a truck pan instead that has a cleanout.
Question: Is this a simple even exchange of pans and gaskets, or is there oil pump issues things also??

ps my truck has a shock absorber connected to the front wheel connection to stablize the steering-does a truck pan interfere with this normally?

I believe the pan is the same shape and size as the rear sump you have now. You may or may not find a windage tray in your current pan, but I think you'll find it a simple swap.

Stabilizer shouldn't get in the way.

Only issue might be the dust cover/seal on the bellhousing. Ford used several different styles and the pan with the cleanout used a 2 piece dust shield - one of which is a little aluminum deal that is bolted to the block with 2 long bolts that go in thru the square boss on the back of the pan. (Easier to see this than explain it)

It sits between the oil pan and the dust shield.

I think the truck pan also holds an extra quart of oil, which is good but I am not totally sure.

I have a car pan on my F-1. I can drop it in the time it takes to drop the sump plate on the truck pan. Are you really planning to clean your screen that often? If you're using detergent oil, it shouldn't be necessary.

Ford dropped the truck pan on the F100 and maybe the 250/350 in 53 so if you want originality then keep it. And as mentioned above I see absolutely no benefit in the "truck" pan in this century.

thanks for all your replys-I did not know in 53 they put car pans on..
my screen has not been cleaned in the 15years I've had the truck but I change oil often

I have never dropped the pan yet-it is a scary thought to me. I put the frame up front on jacks right?

If you need the room then a couple of 6T jack stands will do the job; the smaller ones dont have the reach or are too unstable fully extended. Most of us without beer bellies just wiggle underneath and dont need no stinkin' stands!
While you have the pan down consider replacing the oil pump as the gear tolerance is probably well out of spec by now. Speedway sells the Melling M-19 pump which is the same model Ford used

Why change it, I feel with the much better selection of motor oil these days that cleanout isn't really necessary anyhow. I have that style pan on my 51F1 and that bigger flange just gives another place for oil to leak out.

I couldn't quite get the pan out without jacking it up a little, can't remember if it was the drag link or the axle that wasn't quite clearing. How hard a job it is also depends what exhaust you're running.

If you're going to pull the pan for a look-see, why not replace the oil pump? It's about a 10 minute job if you've got the pan off.
