2005 SuperDuty Automatic head lights

Howdy all,

I know this isn't really 6.0L specific (but it is a problem with my 6.0L powered F350!)

My auto-headlights recently went intermittent and then quit working altogether. If I select the "regular" ON position, all is good. It's just the Auto position that is not turning the headlights on when the key is on........

Does anyone know how they actually work when the "Auto" mode is selected?
Is it all in the switch or is there some sort of controller elsewhere? The actual switch costs about double the NON-automatic switch so I am thinking there's something in the switch that does it all.

Thanks,

Rick

The sensor for the auto lamps is on the dashboard. They do go bad and don't work if covered.

What would the sensor be for? The lights have always come on any time the key is on if the **** is in the auto position.

If that's the case, your senser has been bad from the start. Thankfully it is not bad on the operating side.
When I start my truck the head lights come on. When the senser reads the light it does one of two things, shut off or stay on. I would definitely look into testing or replacing you senser.

87-1 is from the 2006 year. Should still be about the same.
The little sensor on the dash is also part of the EACT and is
called the sunload sensor.

The auto lamps come on when dark only. it sounds like you may be talking about DRL instead which Ford did on trucks for export.

Well, I thought I was talking about DRL since it did appear that the lights were on all the time when the "Auto" position was selected. But evidently this is not the case. And now that I have actually tested the glareshield (top dash) sensor in bright sunlight, it's not clear that I do not have DRL.

It's the "regular" auto headlight system and it actually appears to be working properly. I did not know what light level the headlights would normally be on. They appeared to always come on whenever I started inside the "garage" in ambient light. I never really did notice that when I backed out, they would eventually turn off of their accord if I remained in bright sunlight.

Maybe they will come on in heavy cloud cover but otherwise not dark enough to "need" headlights. I did look in the area where the relay would be located and it appears to be not installed (I wonder if I could put one in there though and have DRL?)

When I pulled the truck out into the sunlight after the lights coming on, they did after a few min, turn off. When I covered the "sensor", they did in fact come back on, so I guess they are "working"

Thanks Sean! (for the info and schematics)

If Auto headlights had you confused, don't buy a new truck! It will throw you for a loop when a drizzle of rain starts and the wipers come on or your heated or cooled seats are coming on by themselves or when you put it in reverse the outside mirrors tip down automatically. Then there is a button on the wheel that when you push it you can tell the lady in the dashboard what to set the climate control temp to or tune the radio station ect.... 🤣

Really though, glad you figured out how they operate.

And after you pay that bill more than likely they did not fix the problem.

Would like to know the test procedure for the sensor, if anyone knows it!
I am going to assume that it's a standard photocell that will change resistance with light level...... Anyone know the range of resistance for it?
