When you disconnected the long shift rods, were you able to move the levers on the side of the transmission? Each one should have three positions. One must be in the center position (neutral) in order for the other lever to move.

Brake fluid

Another problem is I can’t find where to put the brake fluid. There is no place anywhere on the van to put fluid into other than oils cap.

with the rods disconnected from the bottom of the steering column, can you move the shifter in the cab?
first gear pull shifter toward you and then push down. second is lift shifter up out of first, and push toward dash, then push up. then third straight down. reverse is pull to you and push up.

Adam - do yourself a solid and pickup a reprint copy of the Operator's Manual. Even better, the Ford Shop Manual. All that stuff is in thar. And then some. Fluid types and quantities, voltages, torque specs, troubleshooting and repair etc etc.

if i remember correctly, the brake master cylinder is under the van, towards the front connected to the brake pedal where it comes through the floor.

the shifter works like a "H". to you and UP is reverse. to you and DOWN is first. away from you and UP is second. away from you and DOWN is third.the shifter works in 4 different quadrants. if it does not move in a "H" pattern, something is locked up in the column.

Ok I got all of that but when I turn it on and try to shift into any gear all that happens is it grinds and won’t go into gear

The brake reservoir is in the floor, just in front of the driver's seat.
