DIY Truck Bed Slider

As an isolation project, I decided to make a truck bed slider. I copied the design cwood used, with a few tweaks of my own.

It's not perfect, there's a few little issues. I used 2 x 4 lumber for the drawer sides and the base sides and they're slightly warped. I thought attaching the steel rails to them would straighten them out, but the rails conformed to the 2x4 instead! It still works however, there's a little binding but for the most part it moves quite smoothly.

I used a 1/2" bolt as a pin for locking the drawer in place. I drilled a hole through the bolt and used aircraft wire to secure the bolt so I don't lose it!

In the future I'd probably spend the extra money for straighter lumber, but for now this solution works. I plan to add dividers for groceries and other items to section things out a bit. I'm also going to paint it, not sure what color yet.

It's a good weekend project and it will make life way easier going forward!

Nice.

Now all it needs is 2-3 coats of Thompsons Water seal.

Thanks! I've debated whether I go the sealer route or the paint route, if I go the seal I can't paint. If I paint, I can't apply sealer. Not sure which way I'll go, I'd like it to look nice.

Hmmm, I wonder how something like a spray on bed liner will react to bare wood or if that’s even possible.

I know there’s some type that can be applied like paint with a roller and the results are awesome.

I’ve seen it applied to a wood sub woofer cabinet.

I agree! Nice job!

I had a commercially made bed slide that was limited to 800 lb, and had a limit of 2/3 extension. Any idea what your job would handle?

Thanks!

I'm actually not sure about the weight, right now the base is just sitting in the back of the bed. I haven't locked the base into position, once I do that I'll have to test it out. Not sure if it would handle 800 lbs, that might be pushing it.

I would try Helmsman spar urethane or similar, the wood looks good. Russ

How did you end up securing the base to the truck?
