Looking for a starting point! I am working on a 96 7.3. It is running rough, in a way it idles like it has a miss and the engine seems to be surging. It reminds me of an old gas engine with a bigger cam! It is starting hard. It takes several minutes of cranking to get it to start and run.
The check engine light is on, but using forscan I am not getting any codes. I am running the misfire monitor through Forscan but it is not showing any misfires.
The owner said he replaced the oil pressure sensor on the front of the engine, and he changed the CPS. He did use a cheap CPS, but it did not change the way it was running.
He said that sometimes the check engine light will go off and it will run good, then the light will come back on and it will lose power.
Any suggestions of where to start?
Take a look at the plugs on the harness to the valve cover gasket. Look for any signs of melting or burned pins. If those look good, pull the valve covers and look for the same on the harness there. If any signs of melting are there, replacement of those along with the valve cover gasket is the fix.
Good suggestion! I buzz tested injectors and found #4 circuit low. Pulled the front plug to the valve cover, it crumbled and a couple of pins were melted.
So next question, what is the fix? Is there a replacement harness or do I need to solder a new plug on?
Got it. Right after I posted I checked online and found the gasket, harness and plug. I will be changing it all tomorrow. I will also check the glow plug while I am at it.
Thanks for the information!
Got it fixed! Thanks for the advice. The plugs were burned and brittle on both the male and female ends. The glow plugs all ohmed out good. Got the gasket and wired changed and it runs good.
