I've been looking through old threads in reference to headers. Hooker comp headers were mentioned a couple of time as fitting well. I looked on the Hooker sight at these and they specifically state " will not fit passenger car heads".
Number Dummy decoded the tag from my engine at one time and said it was a 390 from a 68' Mercury passenger car. The heads are marked C8AE-H.
After researching further I can't find out what is the difference between truck and passenger car heads. I haven't seen anything saying they're different but have seen people say they're the same.
Some of the passenger car heads had different exhaust manifold bolt patterns for the FE class of engines. All pickup trucks used the same bolt pattern. Call the header manufacturer and ask what the port size and bolt hole center to center distance is for what they are selling. Measure yours - if that info is a match there should be no tube clearance issues.
These are just the ordinary looking eight bolt exhaust, however the potential answer seems to be in Christmas' article
"Like other FE heads, the C6AE-R head has an exhaust side with a normal 8-bolt pattern. Heads from 1966-on, including the later truck heads, have the exhaust port in a lowered location while the bolts remained in the same spot. This can make it difficult for some headers to fit because they overlap the port opening causing header leaks and reduced power. Since header manufacturers do not specify which head was used to master their mounting flange, the only way to determine whether any particular headers will fit is to mark and test fit them first."
