So I am looking to build my 302 in my truck, and i am looking at gt40 and gt40p heads. I will make that decision based on deals i find and such; but my question is will any 5.0 truck headers fit on these heads? or will i have to get a special set? sorry if this is a dumb question but im trying to get all this done in as few shots as possible.
From what I have read the gt40p heads does take its own header. There is alot of good info if you google the gt40 and gt40p heads. It has alot of header problem and fixes people has done.
Stock the GT40P head flow a bit better and makes a bit more power all other things being equal. A little work with a grainder and you can port a GT40 head to equal or better the GT40P.
The "P" head is more numerous as the GT40 head was only sold on 1993-1995 Cobra Mustangs, the Ford Lighting pickups, and the early 302 V8 Explorers through mid-year 1996. That is when they introduced the GT40P. From what I've seen a pair of GT40's can be purchased for around $300. Condition will dictate price but I would not pay over $400 for a pair that is ready to bolt on. The GT40Ps are priced similar and sometimes cheaper as they require special headers and/or different plug wires for performance use.
I paid $300 for a low mile pair of GT40s last year.
I know for a fact that the summit pacesetter shorties will clear the P heads with a small dimple on the number 7 or 8 primary. And that the ford racing SS shorties will require a large dent and a header shorty plug to clear on number 4.
