Thanks for the good advice, the autozone new is probably what I’ll go for. I’ll report back after installation, it will be at least next week sometime.
I was able to reuse all my boots when upgrading to the SD starter. Just make sure you get the offset gear reduction model. The only modification was that I had to drill out the ring terminal just a bit. The stud on the SD is apparently just a touch larger. Otherwise it was pretty easy and it cranks FAST
Yes I am getting the offset gear reduction from Autozone, although there were a few negative reviews on that starter. I wonder if folks think they got a bad starter when it was some other problem. We’ll see how this one works out.
Hit Man suggests I check the alt brushes, but I’m not sure what to look for. Never done that before.
The brushes ride on part of the armature inside it. Pull the votlage regulator as the brushes are attached to it. They should stick out decently far. Easy to replace just those if yours are pretty far worn or you can just use a new VR.
I have lots of AZ starters amd alternators. Only had one starter begin to fail. Bendix would not release quick enough. They swapped it for me no questions.
Once delivered, have it load tested at your local store to verify it works prior to install.
I guess it is required to pull the alternator to replace the VR?
You might be able to get behind there, I never looked close. My Bricknose I have to pull it. Since the plugs are atop, I would think you could pull the VR without alternator removal.
Installed new starter and fender relay, truck starts good now. I haven’t looked at the Voltage Regulator yet, it seems there are a bunch of different part numbers for this thing. I found one on Amazon I think might work. Here is link:
Just my opinion but if that alternator is putting out 14v and you have had no problem with it leave it alone. If the alternator goes out at some point they are easy to find or have rebuilt. That being said I do not know a lot about alternators. LOL
