Hi Guys,, Ms Rudy here,, He is the "mechanic" .. sort of.. he is great with gas motors.. and pretty good with SEMI TRUCK,,diesel,, but theses diesel pick ups are a whole new world.. I am just the computer person.. so bear with us if something gets confusing... We bought this "new to us" 2004 6.0 about a year ago from a wife selling hubby's truck after a divorce. so we have no records and no idea about it's history. The truck runs GREAT,, when it is running. The issue is that every couple of months or so it will go from running great one day to crank no start the next. this has happened a few times now and the answer has always been pretty simple.. once replacing the blue spring did the trick,, another time there was a fuel hose that needed replacing,, another was we used the wrong oil filter.. but this time has us stumped.. He just did a "bubble test".. no bubbles in the gas bowl but he did see that the fuel is immediately disappearing out of the bowl (3 to 4 minutes).. He thinks he needs to test the fuel pump, but cant figure out how to test it .. all we can find on you tube is pressure tests.. but the truck has to be running.. Any suggestions??
Search you tube for Diesel Tech Ron videos on 6.0 crank no starts.
Use an app called Forscan and an obd adapter to read the engine parameters.
Usually this is not a fuel issue. It is typically related to the high pressure oil system that powers the injectors. But without data you are guessing. There can be numerous other causes as well.
Forscan Lite for your cell phone both Android and Apple. Best little scanner code reader for these trucks. 5.99 at the ap store. Then you'll need a osb11 dongle. Bluetooth for Android or WiFi for Apple. Eather that or another code reader and post some readings.

Start there the guys here are very good with the Wright info.
Post some pics of the top of your motor
As an FYI, the secondary fuel filter bowl emptying isn't all that concerning. Yes it should stay full, but mine doesn't and it does not impact starting or engine operation.
If you want to check the BASIC fuel pump operation, just remove the secondary fuel filter and have someone turn the key on (no need to crank). The fuel bowl SHOULD fill fairly quickly.
All that said, you REALLY need to put a pressure gauge on the fuel pressure regulator - there is a port specifically for a pressure sensor to be installed.
