Battery ground cable location

Hello, can anyone tell me where the negative battery cable originally terminated on a 74 F100? I've always thought it went straight to the engine block and the chassis was grounded off a wire from there, as well as the cab having a ground off the engine itself. Am I wrong?
Thanks.

Never from the factory. . the starter is the heaviest draw in the system it has to have a solid ground.

Maybe not by '74, Ford did cheap out in prior years to that though and ran the negative cable directly to the firewall, behind the battery, and another from the firewall to the engine block. All of the OEM beancounters not just Ford seemed to treat copper as a semi-precious metal and always used fairly light gauge cable as short as possible.

Seem to remember my 72 F250 (years ago) ran to the engine mount and from there a short cable to the cross member, as well as a thin ground strap from the rear of the engine to the cab. But I'm getting old and have forgot a percentage of what I know 😂

I've seen that a few times on older rigs. but essentially the ground cable just makes a stop on it's way to the block. it still isn't grounding off the cab as an accessory it is the main ground to carry the amps. .

Well sure, but when they save money on copper, now there's 2 extra connections there, where ideally there would only be that one. The one thing about electrical connections, high current low voltage, or any electrical connection really, they are always a potential point of failure, they start to degrade on day 1 and will eventually fail altogether, it's just a matter of time. Most people are familiar with battery terminal failure but it's the same problem at any terminal.

The road salt spray and pollution accelerates this big time. I always buy a big *** cable and run it direct to the block or a bolt on the starter. Block, frame, firewall.
