Rustyshakelford’s 2020 Dually Build

We ordered a loaded platinum in January. Had been waiting for info on silver spruce and had a deadline when we needed the truck so we decided on blue jeans metallic. Truck arrived two weeks early and we picked it up 3/11. It was the first 20 platinum they had and salesman kept taking pics to show their wives.

We bought this to haul our jeeps and customer jeeps around the country to Jeep events and to also provide pick up and delivery. My previous ford Dually was on 35s and had an aluminum flatbed for gooseneck clearance thanks to the lift it had. My wife refused to drive it so I wanted something she would drive and help me out with driving duties on these long drives.

Plan was to pretty much leave it stock. Well that didn’t last long. So far we have tinted all the windows including the windshield, added 285/75r17 Toyo open country at2, ordered a Carli commuter with 3” lift blocks. Hopefully I can get a toolbox/fuel tank combo installed and weightsafe 3” hitch too.

After talking to some folks about mods it seems like we’re going to be some early adopters of things and wanted to share our build and answer any questions guys have. The reason for the lift block is stock, when we hook to our 28’ car hauler the rear sits about .5” lower than the front.

When we brought it home.

Brett

Here’s how it sits now. Once the tires were in I considered leaving it alone and not lifting it. However, I rolled the jack out and lifted it to the new ride height and I quickly changed my mind. Lift will be here Wednesday and I’ll put it on then or hopefully Thursday! The Dually was a curve ball for a bunch of folks as we try and figure out the new ride height on the 20s. I’m hoping I chose the right block but worst case is I’ll have to swap it out.

.25” spacer. Originally was going to run 35/12.5 but didn’t want them sticking so far outside the fenders and needing the 2” spacer. It’s tight but the clearance should be fine.

I ran Toyo MT's on my original '07 4X4 Ranger (don't ask) and '08 F-250 (two sets on the F-250... mileage - 35's the 1st time, 37's the last time - 4" leveling kit) and had really good luck with them! The AT2's look really good on yours... how do they ride compared to the stock tires?

I like them, they ride a little rougher but on the other hand, I only drove it 600 miles stock. They are louder than stock but I was happy for the 50k mile warranty!

I have a 17, 450. Miss the turning radius but in the event I wanted to mod this one, I wanted the 350 to make it easier as far as wheels and tires. Also, don’t need the 4.30 gears anymore.

I hear that - my 2019 and the 19.5's don't give me a lot of leeway in tire choices, I don't really want to change because I carry a 5500+lb truck camper and actually, so far (8,500 mi.), the Continental Conti Hybrid HD3's have been pretty good! (knock, knock, knock)

Our factory continental on the 17 was great after a couple thousand miles. The first couple thousand could be an interesting experience! Sounds like you have the perfect truck for your camper, that things heavy! I pulled our gooseneck that weighted in around 28k lbs! Ford has built a terrific truck.,

Ordered a lift for my trailer too. Didn’t want to worry about smashing my bedsides. Should be here next week to get it installed. Will also help with ground clearance! Might have to upgrade these tires too so it doesn’t look like it missed leg day!

did you use an axle flip kit, putting the springs on top of the axle? Do you like it still? I bought an aluminum flatbed for my last lifted truck because I didn’t want to crush the bed, don’t know why I didn’t think about it then and saved 5g!

You're right - the first time I crossed a legitimate highway "groove", the truck decided "it" was steering and not "me"! Scared the hell out of me - someone had actually warned me about it with the Conti's but I had no idea what he really meant until the first time that it happened. He said that his did it until about 15k and then finally smoothed out and stopped... I've already noticed it getting better! And the truck, yes, everyone kept telling me "Just get an F-350 dually and put air bags, a heavier sway bar, upper and lower Torklift StableLoads and better shocks on it??? I just bought an F-450 with heavier axles, a sharper turning radius, much heavier brakes and a heavier sway bar already on it... DONE!

They built a subframe. Got 4 inches.

Really I should have just went with a dexter 2 inch bolt on lift. What I originally suggested. I notice now my ramps are too high so I will need to throw blocks under them. I was too busy at the time to stop by and talk to them.

Im sure I’ll have that issue too but since I’m only loading 6k jeeps, I doubt I’ll worry about the ramps. They fold flat now so it would involve me putting blocks or something under it. First time I load, I’ll see how much deflection there is and go from there. I’m hoping the flip kit gets here soon so I can knock it all out this week.

The rear blocks for the truck didn’t ship with the lift so I’ll be able to see it with the stock rear and get accurate measurements vs knocking it all out at once
