How long will cats last??

HI

i was wondering how long the catalytic converters last. I have a 2001 5.4 with 57000 miles and the original exhaust system. I was planning on putting on the flowmaster cat back system and if the cats were going to wear out soon i would have it all done at once.

Racerguy do you know how much the factory cats cost?? i have a cousin that works at a dealership and can get them at cost for me. i would get the factory ones if they werent to expensive. If the factory ones were to much i was going to get 2 high flow cats and have a y pipe made.

Thanks
Brian

You don't need new cats. They don't really wear out if the engine is maintained. They are designed to outlast the car. Usually the go bad if the engine is having a running problem. Save your money and don't worry about it

Thanks aldridgec, you saved me some typing
I don't know what cats are worth for your truck but generally they are very expensive.

They are called catalysts for a reason! They are only helping a reaction without being actually involved, so to speak. This means they don't use up.

Hey.
I am seeing about 140,000 miles for the cats to be replaced. Our trucks do a lot of idle running as well. The last one i did cost a little over $1000. I have done two trucks.

Must be the idling doing them in by contamination. If they don't run nice and hot every now and then, they can go south. Close to 170k miles on our 97 and it still passes CA smog with flying colors.

another option you could use is to replace the stock cats with high flow ones. they are much cheaper after hearing that $1000 figure. Geez, you can get a high flow cat from catco for about 100 bucks. Then just do the welding yourself and your in business for lots less money.

I would question how much better flow aftermarket cats have over the factory ones. And remember there are 4 cats and I'm pretty sure that the cat pipes are stainless steel, so that would complicate welding them yourself a little.
