Just got back from an 800 mile round trip last night with my truck and cattle trailer. The truck performed great minus a couple things that cropped up. Half of the trip I was empty, just had the stock trailer on. Then I picked up two cows and returned home. Nothing heavy. I would guess I was around 14-16k total.
Problem #1 was my abs light coming on during the return trip. I didn't notice any issues with braking. I'm thinking I may have a wheel speed sensor going bad. I will dig into that more in a few days
Problem #2 is my temp deltas. I got Torque Pro up and running as I was leaving, but didn't pay much attention to it until I got to pulling my first bigger hill. I noticed that my temp deltas was around 18 before starting the hill, but it was backwards. My oil was 18 degrees cooler than my coolant. This was fairly average for the entire trip . At times the spread got smaller but it was always backwards. Historically my truck runs about an 8-12 degree Delta with the oil being warmer. I have never noticed my coolant temp read warmer like this. Has anyone seen anything like this that was more than a sensor failure?
In case it doesn't show in my signature my truck is a stock 05 f350. Only engine mod is the blue spring upgrade.
I would take temp readings after you let her cool down. That will give ya an idea if one of your sensers is bad. They should be within 1 or 2 degrees of each other. You really need to let it totally cool down, basicly to outside temp.
Remembered to check temps this afternoon. After about a 20-22 hour cold soak all temps are within a degree of each other. Still not ruling out a bad sensor. Just kinda found it interesting they are so close.
Another thing you can do is swap the coolant and oil sensors. You can also remove them and put the sensor ends in an oil bath that was heated in the oven to 200 degrees.
What were the actual numbers you were seeing with the 18F upside down spread? I assume you've got the stock oil cooler, not an external air-cooled one?
I will probably swap them as you suggest bismic. Just gotta find the time in the coming week. While I have them out switching them I might just try the heating them on the stove method. I'm assuming they are just resistance based sensors? So I should be able to hook my meter to them and watch the resistance readings?
Jester, average temp was in the 185-190 for coolant and 160-165 for the oil. On long up hill pulls or pushing into the wind hard I would see coolant up to the 205 range and oil in the 190-195 range.
Seems like the more I was working the engine the closer the two got to each other but the oil always stayed cooler. Also, you are correct, stock oil cooler, nothing else. Minus the blue spring upgrade the engine compartment is bone stock.
