Went to start up my newly acquired 1982 E350 and it won't start. I turned on the headlights, they do not come on. Dome light not coming on as well. No power at all. I installed the new starter that came with it, and the battery I bought for it is good, had it tested . It seems like it is not getting power somewhere, what / where should I be checking? I was thinking a missing ground wire, but don't know where they should be on the Econoline. I did notice an orange fusible link near the cowl, that had a "bump" in the insulation, (see attached photo) Could that be the culprit?
the ground will be right at the battery to the body. Then one will go down and attach to the body and frame. The bracket that attaches to these is a grounding point. Check it for corrosion. Also make sure the battery is getting a good connection. I'd check the wires at the battery first since even though they look okay the connection may be crap from corrosion on the cables especially the crimp style clamps. If nothing else get new wires. A decent meter and a friend to turn the key while you check voltage at the battery and then wires and working your way down the connections will be your best bet.
Okay a little update: I swapped starter relays, still no headlights/dome lights and nothing when I use the key. BUT I can now jump across the relay posts and get it to crank over. Also observed no ground wire running from the neg terminal to body and none from the engine to the frame rail
