I have a 1976 Dana 44HD, with the "large hubs", that is what I was told anyway, and the hubs are much larger than most.
I currently have this in a 1 ton 4x4 van, with a powertrax locker, and 33" pro-comps.
I have just purchased a 1989 E350 ambulance, with a diesel 7.3 liter. I would like to put this axle under the ambulance. I have fabricated a truss for the axle, and gusseted all the knuckles. My concern is if this axle is strong enough to carry this heavy of a load dependably???? Im not real concerned about breaking internals, I very rarely use the 4x4, and usually only in snow.
I just dont want the cost of a Dana 60 at this point, and have read a few things, about this axle having the same strength as a 60, exept for the ring and pinion. Anyone have any experience with the weight limitations of the knuckles and bearings??
The D44 HD was design for just such a purpose as you want to use it. It is basically a D60 from the carrier out. The main difference being the ring and pinion size. The HD should fit you purpose just fine, especially if you are going to stick with 33's and just snow.
Not to miss judge you, But is this the stock setup in the 1 ton van? If so I'd check the frontend real close. It maybe a D60? If it's stock look on the door tag and get the Axle tag # and look it up or past it here. Cause if it's one of the Factory or conversion Company 4x4 Job I don't see why they'd use the D44HD over the D60 in something as heavy as a van?
I converted the van myself. I also put the Powertrax in myself, had to order it for a D44.
Quigley and Pathfinder both use the D44 in thier conversions. The D60 is an option. I think with the D44 you dont need to raise the van as high in the front to avoid the crossmember.
