I pulled an axle set out of 1974 F250. Its a rear Dana 70. The front is a HD Dana 44 low pinion, open knuckle, and disc brake, both axles have 4.10 gears. With the help of 75F350 it is determined that the front axle is most likely out of a '76. Were these axles ever paired together from the factory or was the front just swapped in? Thanks
From everything Ive read the 70 came in 2 wheel drive F350's. The 4wd F250 & F350's had Dana 60's in the rear. I would think the 44 or low pinion 60 came in the front of early 70's trucks but not open knuckles disk brake versions.
Was a posi or locker in the rear a factory option? Because that Dana 70 has one in it
Which does it have? Locker or Limited slip?
Pull the cover off of it, and post a pic. These are easy to verify.
The factory axles did not have a "Locker", these are not typical factory options, ever. (for this era).
Many LS units are mistaken for lockers and are just limited slips.
(BTW, posi traction is a GM term) Fords use limited slip diffs. I know splitting hairs, but you know...........
every 3/4 ton truck with a divorced transfer case I've ever seen had the low pinion disk brake Dana 44
Then you have not seen a 75 or older F-250 with an original front axle.
The 76 truck was when the big change occurred. The 75 and older trucks came with low pinion axles with drum brakes.
I think that is probably limited slip, in your pic you have the diff turned 90 deg off for me to tell. I know it doesn't look like my detroit locker does though.
