idiot bell

You know, i thought ford got their act together with the idiot bell when i bout my new (used 99) f350. The bell rang at the approiate times and for not too long. When i had my lights on and key out, when first but key in to start it up (kinda anoying, but could deal with). But recently, the bell rings CONSTANTLY when my drivers door is open, key in, key out (engine off). Once i start the truck and leave the door open, it goes away. Is this how it is supposed to be or is something wrong? This now makes me want to unplug the damn bell and chuck it.

I unhooked the bell on my truck. Thought it was for the better, but now I find myself forgetting to shut the lights off sometimes..

on my 89 and 92 it was easy to unhook, but it seems harder to do on the 99. I cant seem to locate it at a quick glance. Where is it?

I pulled my igintion switch and removed the plastic switch (flat plastic with a metal contact finger) and put a peace of tape over its contact tab in the colum. That got rid of all key in the ingition chim functions but the chim still goes when the lights are left on. It takes 2 minutes, and did it in a logging block the first time I took the truck out hunting.

If you just cut the wire or pull switch out all together Is best.
If you put tape on it the tape can come off and get jamed up in the switch.

To remove or to tape it you need to put the key in the in the ignition and turn it then take a small screw driver or paper clip and poke the little ball up and pull the ignition switch out then you will ses the little black plastic thats it pull it off put the ignition back in and your ready to go.

Yes, take the actuator off the side of the body of the lock cylinder. Depending on what year you have they are black, orange, or gray. If you don't tape off or cover the contact in the colum it will ground to the lock cylinder and your chime will think the key is always in the ignition. This is a ground circut. Theres nowhere for the tape to go. Its betwwen the outer body of the lock cylinder and the bore in the colum it fits into, they are not moving parts. The ignition must be in the run position then poke a nail or something skinny in the hole on the underside of the colum below the ignition switch witch pushes a locating pin into the lock cylinder releasing it from the colum. You must be in the run position.
