Today I kept truck running to load up some mulch. Put in drive-go to leave and truck’s low oil pressure warning came on. I turned off truck. Restarted and it ran sluggish for .5 mile then “ran normal”.
Oil pan/ gasket replaced 2 weeks ago. They put in standard grade oil. Previously running full syn. Some research says oil sending unit may not be the fix. Could this be a software/ computer issue?
I did not notice, was not looking, at the oil pressure guage on dash. Went on to finish the 20 mile drive in stop and go traffic. Ran fine. I am considering changing to a higher viscosity full synthethic?
Was the rpm too low when you pulled away? Maybe you should have a mechanical oil gauge connected to see if your oil pressure is too low. Conventional oil is fine to run in these vehicles. They just need to be changed at a lower mileage than synthetics. I don't use synthetics in either my 02 F-150 5.4l or my 17 Mustang GT 5.0l and haven't had any issues. Truck is my winter/summer driver and the Mustang is just summer due to summer tires on it.
My first thought is did they use a cheap filter? the second thing is how well did they clean things up, could the mechanic have scraped gasket and sealer and left crud in the oil pan?
Get something that can read the PCM's telemetry, watch the oil pressure from before start. Start the engine, let it settle, rev it a couple of times. If the pressure acts as it should (zero before start, run up at start, slight changes with revving) then you're getting some kind of reading and it's probably not a PCM issue. Now the question is: What oil pressures did you see? Were they close to minimums?
