Starter Bendix problem

Hello, I have a 79 Ford F 250 with a 400 and the starter stopped working. When I pulled it out there was a small short dowel pin sitting next to the bendix gear. I can't figure out where this pin came from. I'm thinking it's about 3/16 diameter. Is there a dowel pin somewhere in the bendix assembly?

The starter drive/Bendix has several rollers in it that fit that description. I can't remember exactly but maybe 5 of them. Sometimes the rollers come out when the Bendix housing is broken. You can buy a new Bendix for a Ford starter and they are not hard to change. You used to be able to buy a kit that came with Bendix, bushings, and brushes. I am a big on rebuilding starters and alternators instead of taking a gamble with the "supposed to fit" chain store exchange units.

Unsure about starter but there are dowel pins on back of engine block for tranny to line up to block

Thanks, I have been trying to find an exploded view of a starter or bendix to see if I can find thin pin. Google has not been any help.

These pins are much smaller than the ones you mention.

Is there a pin to secure the gear on shaft on end of starter ? Perhaps it sheared or fell out ?

A pic would help. But that pin or the piece of it is likely the pivot pin from the movable pole shoe. It is retained in place by the pole shoe cover. Without it the starter will not work...

See below Circled in red.

Well, I figured it out, it was parts inside the bendix that keep the gear spinning in one direction kind of like a clutch. Red Mercury had it right.
