I remember when cars had retractable antennas. If the radio was off, the antenna retracted into the fender. Like Lariatdriver, I think antennas built into the glass are the way to go. My 98 toyota has the antenna in the rear window. My 13 suburban has the antenna in the rear side glass. No issues with either of those.

I had '78 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a retractable antenna. Nice feature.
