Airbag removal

Hello everyone. I know this has been covered here and YouTube, but I’m having a hell of a time.

2017 F250 XL. I’m trying to change the steering wheel out. I push in the tabs for the airbag and feel it release, but then it will not come off. I’ve tried Allen wrenches, meat thermometers, and ice picks. Has anyone else had their airbag stuck, and what did you do to get it off.

Im pretty machanically inclined, but this is driving me crazy!

Maybe get a third hand. My trouble was I'd get one side released then go for the other side and the first side would snap back into the 'lock'. With a third hand, you could push both releases in simultaneously and have the third hand wiggle the air bag out. (Make sure your battery has been disconnected and bled down.)

Long T handle allen. Once you hear it snap, I pry up on it on that one side while you remove the allen and go to the other side.

see that’s thing, mine pops and still won’t come off. I think I have the right side off now as I can see the back, but still fighting the left side?

Yup I had same problem, same side. Once I kinda feel it snap on the left I use a nylon pry tool and pry it up from the top of the wheel. The bag snaps into 4 spots but the 2 sides is what securely holds it in.

I had really hard time, drove me nuts! You see it on YT taking 2 minutes, and I was fighting with it for 2 hours! Long allen wrench didn't do a thing for me, tried screwdrivers etc. In the end, what worked was old long meat thermometer. Go figure! I got the right side pop first, but wouldn't really move much. Finally, after getting left one pop a little, I wiggled the whole thing in all directions and it came off.

the bag attaches in three locations not four. Left right and bottom. Release the left and right and then rotate the wheel all the way around and get the bottom piece. If you have a small mirror it will make things a lot easier on you. You can do it with the truck running so you have the steering assist and if you release all of the tabs when you position them at the top by the instrument cluster it is much easier. Shut the truck off when it’s loose and disconnect the batteries before you unplug stuff though.

Thank y’all! I gave up for the day this afternoon hoping someone on here would tell me I was missing something. Instead y’all made me realize I’m not a moron and almost there haha.

I’ll have it by lunch Sunday. Hopefully...

I too was having a hard time removing the air bag. And as mentioned above, you need a "long" Alan wrench or something like it. The tab inside that needs to be depressed is very tough to get to. I used a 4mm alan wrench that was extra long and it worked perfectly. After I did the wheel swap, I now have a warning light that comes on everytime I shut the truck off. See below and let me know what you guys think may have started this:

Make sure you don't have Ask On Exit enabled in the IPC Vehicle Security settings.

SETTING THE ALARM SECURITY LEVEL

1. Press Settings on the touchscreen.
2. Press Vehicle Settings.
3. Press Alarm System.
4. Press Motion Sensors.
5. Press a setting.

WHAT IS ASK ON EXIT

You can choose which level of security you require after you switch the ignition off.
Note: If you do not choose a setting, the system defaults to all sensors.

SWITCHING ASK ON EXIT ON AND OFF

1. Press Settings on the touchscreen.
2. Press Vehicle Settings.
3. Press Alarm System.
4. Switch Ask on Exit on or off.

I just tried this and when I go to vehicle settings, there is no "alarm system" in the vehicle settings menu. Do I need to change it via Forscan? Thanks.

With a XLT, I'm assuming you have the 4.2" IPC. Should be somewhere under Advanced Settings. See at the ~1:50 minute mark of this video.

My previous 2020 and current 2022 have always done this at shutdown. This is nothing out of the ordinary. I usually close the door and walk away, it won't hurt anything.
Somehow your truck must have had it deactivated in the instrument cluster settings before you removed the steering wheel. As h2OCamper says, you should be able to find this in the settings and adjust.
My understanding is that All Sensors will have your interior motion sensors activated along with the perimeter. If Perimeter Sensing is chosen, the interior will not be on. For such occasions as maybe a dog left in the truck, etc.
