I have a 2001 F-150 and want to change out the steering wheel. How do I take off the air bag to swap wheels and then re-install it? Several people have told me the air bag is dangerous to deal with. Thanks, this is a GREAT site!
Pretty easy. Two nuts on the back side of the steering wheel hold the air bag in. There are trim covers over these nuts that will pop off with a screw driver.
Make sure you disconnect the battery before removing the air bag and also it's a good idea to ground your tools prior to loosening the nuts to ensure there is no static electricity in the ratchet which theoretically could discharge the bag. There is just a electrical connection behind the bag to disconnect and the bag will come out.
Disconnect the battery for at least 15 min. before you start and keep the airbag away from you when you remove it, just in case. Oh, and welcome to FTE!
