The airbag system DOESN'T store any energy to deploy the bag, anywhere, anytime, except in the main battery under the hood.
When you disconnect the airbag connector inside the steering wheel, you've not only disconnected it from its only power source (the vehicle), but there's also a built-in automatic shorting connector that prevents static from deploying the bag, so you're totally safe.
