My 1980 F350 tilt steering doesn't hold. If you put the wheel in the upper position and you put hardly any tension on the wheel it skips back down. How hard will this be to fix and are parts available?
Also, the needle on the column for trans selector doesn't move. Thanks for any info.
I find steering columns very difficult to work on. Your indicator is actuated by a little string inside a plastic tube. One end is hooked to the PRND21 indicator, the other end is attached to the steering column on top. If you take the little cover off the steering column near the cluster, you can see it. If the cluster is pulled without disconnecting this, the plastic tube is very brittle and breaks, and then it usually doesn't work anymore.
the lack of a functional prndl is the cable to your shift collar being broken.
The tilt aspect I couldn't say exactly what causes that as we've always replaced the column with another column. My '78 mercury does the same thing if you try to pull yourself up by the steering wheel forward it will fall but normal driving it never popped down into a lower tilt setting.
There's a bit of a how to posted at the very end of the how-tos on the prndl indicator. As for the column, I did some reading last night, there are two places that could come loose it looks like. I didn't see anything about the tilt mechanism breaking. I thought there was, but all I could find was the lock actuator. Won't know until you open it up what's going on with it. It sounds like the mechanism for the tilt works, it's just not tight enough to hold?
The lever that lets it tilt--- put wheel up and HOLD the lever in the opposite direction from tilt. Put pressure on wheel and see if it stays. There is a spring that hold the lever against the tilt gear. if it holds, the spring is possibly weak or broken. Worse case gear stripped or broken.
I had this issue on my Bronco. The tilt mechanism has a 4 tooth pawl that is pinned to the housing and engages another pin to hold position. The pawl holding pin was loose on one end and it allowed the paw to **** and fall out of position under the weight of my hands. I repinned the pawl using a roll pin and no problems since. I’m away from my computer but I’ll try to get pics up in the next day or two.
I'm fuzzy on the details of what I did to fix mine and I haven't located my notes just yet. I do know that the straight pin shown above was not engaged in the driver's side hole in the housing. I replaced it with a roll pin the next size up. I drilled out the housing ever so slightly, maybe a number 11 or 12 bit. If I can find my notes I'll edit this post. The bear out of the bunch is getting the spring back in. I remember struggling with this for a long time. I was clamping on a taper, so my clamp kept sliding off. I changed something up and was able to keep it together long enough to get to the next assembly step.
Sorry that's so vague, if I find my notes I'll tighten it up. It'll be obvious when you get to that point.
This thread is helpful to get you most of the way there.
You can see the pawl laid over to the passenger side. Wouldn't hold tilt position. Don't lose the wire bale clips. Like hen's teeth. This is how I clamped the tilt head to get the pivot pins started. That tilt spring is a beast.
