I have a 1989 ranger stx, register cab, 4x4, with the 2.9L. Also, it's an automatic.I have owned the truck for 17 years and have went thru 10 starters. The flywheel was replaced about 4 starters ago (5yrs ago) and it still continues to rip them out. I've had them stick in the gear and blow up, etc its driving me insane. The teeth on the flywheel are still in great condition.
I installed a new duralast gold starter, solenoid, and hot wire today. It's not engaging, all I get is an extremely loud grinding noise. Wanted to see if anyone knew of anything else I could try.

Reason: More information
More questions for you to help define your problem. An auto uses a flex plate and a manual uses a flywheel. They each have a different diameter. The flex plate is 11.69" with 138 teeth the flywheel is 11.83" and 138 teeth. There is a small inspection plate at the front bottom of the transmission that you can remove and inspect the flywheel/fflex plate. The flywheel is a heavy casting and the flex plate is a metal plate with a starter ring attached to the outer edge. You should have a flex plate is you have an auto, Can't imagine anyone installing a flywheel on an engine with an auto transmission, but the larger diameter would cause binding, grinding like you describe.

Reason: Little keys fat fingers.
All I hear is a loud winding and grinding. The motor does not turn over. The previous starter worked fine but this one does not engage and turn the engine over. Replaced with identical brand and model starter that was on it before.
