I have a 2001 F-150 XLT 4x4 and I have a question about tire size. (I don't know a whole lot about this stuff so forgive me if I sound stupid) Right now I am running 265/75R16 but I would like a tire that fills up the wells. Can anyone tell me the largest tire I can run without rubbing? And any suggestions of what kind? Right now I have Cooper Discoverer STT and they looked cool as hell!! But they are too loud. Obviously, I am going for looks but I guess I should also think about the life.....any suggestions?
the 285-75-16 fit but will rub just a little bit when the wheel is turned all the way, but it does fill up the wheel wells. i just put them on my 2wd with a 3.5 in lift. check out the pics in my gallery
I have a 2000 4x4 XLT Super cab and run a set of 285x75x16's (BFG AT KO's) I have never rubbed once (mostly on-road). Not too noisy, fill wheel wells nicely, and wear well. Only suspension mod is levelled torsion bars up front. I currently have about 58,000 miles on them and looks like I will run them through the winter before replacing(!).
Thanks for your reply. Sounds like that size will work for me. I read on here yesterday about the torsion bars and that's something that I'll probably do first. Hopefully I'll have as much luck with the life of the tire that you have!
I'm also running 265/75/R16 's on my 97 F150. I would like to jump to 285's, my ? is how much do I have to crank up the torsion bars? Will there be any other adjustments I will need to make? Will this affect my handling, ride or tire wear? Should I crank those adjustment bolts all the way in?
dont crank up the torsion bars all the way. You will have no travel and the suspension will be so stiff. I heard that 8 turns of the bolt will level out the truck.
I don't know how many turns my torsion bars were cranked, but just until truck was level. Noticed no degradation in ride quaility or travel, never needed re-align (note my miles on the BFG's!). Good advice to raise no more than level probably.
Yes, as far as I know I haven't rubbed once with basically stock suspension. but I qualify that with not really using the truck off-road. It is mostly daily driver/work truck. FWIW, I run Edelbrock IAS shocks.
Its been 60,000 mi since I had stock shocks, but let's see...the ride is a little better overall, probably a little less body roll in the corners, but the IAS's don't seem to help the live axle/rear end walk much.
Feels really planted in the fast corners as long as the road is relatively smooth. Probably next will look at sway bars/or similar to help rear get tied down a little better. Soon I will research what other shock options have come around in the last 4 years and see if the IAS's are still best for me.
