Seat rails

Hey gents,
Working on my bench seat and I have a couple questions. The sliding mount rails move pretty well, but they are a bit rusty. It looks to me like the stops on the rail are riveted in the top rail front and back.
My questions is about pulling them rails apart. I'm thinking of drilling out the rivets to clean all the rust off the rails and get a good coat of paint on them. Is that worth all the effort it's going to take to remove and find some way to put new rivets in there? Anyone done that before?
My other option is to just sand blast what I can see with them together. With that approach, I'm worried about getting grit down in the rollers between the rails. Don't know how to clean that out without taking the 2 halves apart. Any thoughts on that.
Thanks for the advice. Jeff

Get a 5 gallon bucket and some apple cider vinegar. put it all in the bucket and I usually wait about 2 days . The rust will be gone .You can either let them air dry or use an air compressor to dry them.

Hey Lilorbie, that sounds like an easier solution than either of mine. Thanks for the idea.
Does the vinegar bother the plastic on the adjuster handle or should i try to pop that off?
I guess I can throw the springs and everything into the bucket.
Heck, if that works, I'm thinking a pool of vinegar and drive the whole truck in there.
Thanks again. Jeff

jsc83 I have to correct my self. You need to use regular vinegar. I have used mine so much that it looks like apple cider vinegar. I don't think that the vinegar will hurt the adj. ****, because the vinegar comes in a plastic jug. Man I hate it when I make a mistake, I know that none of us are perfect , but I have worked with some people who think that they are.

john jamieson Your Dad sound's a lot like my Dad. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke it was always some thing good to remember. It's just a little over a year since he passed away and I wish I could hear him say anything. I miss you Dad.

Hey Lilorbie,
Just wanted to thank you again for the vinegar trick to remove the rust. That worked a treat. Amazing. The rust was converted to a mud which required some clean up, but nothing like scouring of the rust. Especially in the hard to reach areas. New seat is going into the truck this weekend.
One thing I did notice is you have to be ready to paint when they come out of the vinegar. I pulled the hardware out and let the rails bake another day. The surface rust was starting to come back in just the first day, but it cleaned up really easy.
I highly recommend the vinegar thing for anyone looking to get rid of rust.

jsc83 No Problemo. It's just something that I have learned along the way. I don't remember where I learned it. I have another tip that might help you if your truck has the aluminum trim on the tailgate that reads Ford. If it 's got a dull finish with no shine . Take a rag /t-shirt and some lacquer thinner and wet the rag/shirt. Then start rubbing the shirt onto the trim and it take off the paint from the letters and when you get done it will look like it has been buffed out , but it's a lot easier. I have done this on two of the trucks that I have owned. The last one was done about 3 years ago and it looks like I did it yesterday.
