Help with Engine ID
Surprisingly, I found out that the engine was replaces with a "new used engine" back in 1978. It's a little like your wife telling you the kid you raised isn't yours.
Well, maybe not that severe, but I still don't know what engine I got in my truck. There is sticker on the air filter that says 360, which I always found odd since the factory plate lists a 352.
Anyway, I looked on Fordification and there is supposed to be an id tag on the engine in the front right side. Mine is missing.
Since I'm going to be under it tomorrow for an oil change, are there any casting marks or numbers I can pull off to see what engine I actually have in my truck?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks guys and stay safe.
Jeff
But if you do check down the plug hole, look for the piston to move 3.5", same as the 352.
For the most part, the 360 is the same engine year after year. The one worthwhile change would be '72 and later head castings. D2TE would be cast between the middle plugs. Those had hardened valve seats, and that revision stayed with the FE the rest of it's production life.
The HP changes year over year are mostly due to rating changes in the 1972 model year, iirc.

In pickups, in any given year, with the exception of the later 4bbl 390s, a 390 and a 360 are externally identical. Same block, heads, manifolds etc. Crank, rods & pistons are the only differences.
It would not be unusual to swap in a 360 as the 352 ended in '67.
