6.7 diesel motor toast-advice needed-Ford Dlr told me motor shot at 11k

Need advice-Well, got some real crappy news today from Ford dlr. I was told the 6.7 Diesel motor (**UPDATE ONLY COMPLETE FUEL SYS.) in my S/D needs replacement at 11k due to water contamination in diesel/fuel system. I was told the mechanic performed a specific “Ford Checklist” for my issue-engine would crank over but not fire/run. He said performing the checklist due to water contamination in the fuel system. “WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER FORD WARRANTY”!! Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Rust in motor? Doubt it, most likely they are trying to push a faulty CP4 on you and make it your problem. The engine can be repaired just fine with a fuel system refresh kit. That runs about 9k installed a replacement 6.7 runs about 17k installed.

Turn it into your insurance company. Ford is not going to warranty water in the fuel.

The water caused the HPFP to run dry sending metal throughout the fuel system.

What you need I a fuel system kit that ford will use. new injectors, fuel lines, HPFP and then clean out of the tank and new filters.

If you just filled up and have the receipt then maybe you or your insurance co can turn in a claim with the gas station.

I’m a recent victim of contaminated fuel. I was concerned because the dealer diagnosed issue by smelling fuel and visual inspection. I called BS and wanted a fuel analysis done, they drug their feet. I was calling BS because of the issues with the CP4 pump.

Dealer recommended I get my ins co involved (USAA). Ins co was great, they sent out an adjuster and took sample of fuel and it did com back with water in the diesel. Ins covered repair under comp claim less my deductible.

I filled up at same gas station at two week intervals at same pump. Used my 76 card each time so I had all documentation of the fill ups. I contacted station who referred me to fuel distributor who referred me to their ins co. I fwd fuel distributor’s ins info to my ins co. and they ended up reimbursing USAA for the claim and I got my deductible reimbursed too.

This is why I have gotten a receipt every single time I fill up.

If water is the culprit, how is it getting past the water separator? Last July I had a five week episode of a crank over but no start, dealership was stumped, no codes, nothing, THEN they tried the water in fuel story...............LONG story short, turned out to be a bad fuel pump control module. So much for "their" water in fuel theory.
They replaced the part under warranty (msrp $35) truck has been fine since.

fuel contamination can be from transfer tanks, gas stations that don't sell a lot of diesel and over time have excess condensation build up. I used to try and always buy diesel from a busy station and would prefer Chevron or truck stops.

and because of these sensitive fuel systems, cost of maintenance & possible repairs and the love of the Ford diesel trucks.. ..I decided to go with a 2020 7.3L motor
Good luck on your repairs and hopefully other owners will learn and take precautions... ;lots of good info here

What I find disturbing is that enough water can get through system, requiring a complete engine replacement, without any warning long before.

absolutely NO warning sign this was about to happen. That is what’s Scary...Drove the truck (2) days before no issues. When to start in AM and engine just would crank over-no fire. I thought it may be a fuse blown...

I see this is still happening. I had 2011 6.7 and followed the the forum closely. Personally never had an issue but this type of story popped up from time to time. One of the more common things at least then were aftermarket fuel tanks and some improper installations.
Good luck.

Not sure I would go along with the water in fuel problem. The truck has two areas to trap water and give you warning indicators if the water level is getting too high. Time to get it towed to another dealership for a second opinion.
