The tag on my 8.8 rearend tag says 2SL73 . I know that 2L73 would be a 2.73 limited slip , but I can't figure out the "S" in there . I've searched the web for hours and can't find anybody thats got that s in there . Did they just screw up when they stamped it ? or does it mean something ? thanks
Acyually this rear is not for my truck . I'am putting it in my Cougar . The guy I got it from said that it came out of a stang , and it does have the quad shocks on it . Thats all I know about it .
The 7.5 in my BII has the "SL" designation as well. I wondered what it meant until I found a discussion at the ranger station where someone actually knew what it meant. In the early '80s, ford was using a cone type limited slip that had some issues. Something would come loose or break off or something and tended to destroy the whole rear end. Sometime in the '80's, Ford started using the clutch type LS. In those days, in order to distinguish the clutch type (that uses an "S" spring) from the cone type, they used the designation "SL" for the clutch type LS. Sometime in the late '80's/early '90's they started just using "L" to designate the clutch type LS, I guess because the cone type was far enough removed from anyone's memory that they figured it wouldn't be a problem.
