72 Ford -
I have had a 72 Ford for about two years now. It has a 360 with a 2bbl. I have an issue that I sure hope someone out there can give me some hints on.
Over the last couple of months it has started running rough at different times. It starts fine. It could be running fine and then when you take off from a stop, it hesitates, misses, etc. and then smoothes out. Over the last couple of weeks, it has gotten progressively worse. Now the hesitation/stuttering is pretty unpredictable and constant. II took the breather off and noticed a black substance which I assume is oil seeping out on the passengers side between the intake and carb. Havent noticed any smoke coming from the exhaust.
Today I started it and let it run sitting in the driveway. It ran great for about three minutes and then started missing and sputtering while it was sitting there. No way to go anywhere because it was so bad. Oil was seeping out between the intake and the carb. What kind of issue do I have? Oil port stopped up not letting oil drain back down? Any help appreciated.
Thanks Guys
Can you post a picture of this "leak" area so we know where it is?
Compression test is a good start just so you know the shape of the motor. How many miles on it?
When was the last time a full tune up was done? Still running points? Not that there is anything wrong with them just needs looking after is all.
With the motor up to temp if it will run long enough. Pull the air filter, motor off, choke should be open, look down in the carb and move the throttle you should see gas squirt, if not carb clean & rebuild time.

Checked one cylinder before it got dark on me. #5 showed 140lbs. Will post the results of the others when I get them checked. Any specific thing to look for on the PCV system? I took the valve out and it does rattle. What else can i look at there?

Got 140lbs on #5 before it got dark on me tonight. I will get the others checked this week hopefully.
The speedo shows 60k miles. The guy I bought it from said his Aunt was the original owner and let it sit more than it was driven but I know 60k probably isnt right. I tuned it up less than a year ago and replaced distributor at that time. (still points). I set those last weekend. They had gotten a little tight. Put them back to .17.
If its not the compression or the PCV system, it sure acts like a carb issue. If I can get it to run long enough, I can get that choke checked but the way its acting right now, I cant even get it halfway warm.

A real common problem for several years now are defective ignition condensers, they are el-cheapo imported and sold by the pound to the wholesalers. They will cause problems just like you describe (when they work at all) Backfires, rough idle etc.
Try replacing it with a good old U.S. of A. Motorcraft or Standard condenser from your junkbox, it doesn't have to look good so long as it works good.
