ok I went on summits site to look at lockers and I went to powertrax's no slip traction system since that’s what I have in my car and like it very much and it had one for broncos 93 and earlier which I guess have solid axles and the ones for 94-96 it says they have independent front suspension. I thought they all had solid axels... I hope so because the one I’m looking at buying a 95!! So do they all have solid axles or did they actually switch it over to IFS??
damn, oh well maybe i'll get a K5 then if i can find one that isnt rusted, not sure... i wonder why they would list just the 94 and up ones as having ifs then....
Summit's site doesn't say that the '93 and earlier is a solid axle. They do have two entries for the Bronco, though, '71 - '93 and '94 - '96, which I find odd. The part number is the same.
Does anyone know what changed in the Dana 44 IFS in 1994?
i never said that it summits site said that it was a solid axle i said i assumed that it was because the other one was IFS, one other difference between the two is the earlier ones are listed as having posi and the 94 and up ones are listed as having a open diff...
The Dana 44 IFS front I do believe was available with a factory installed Trac- Loc LS in it. (No such thing as "posi" in a Ford). How ever the Summit listing still doesn't make sense since I think it was an available option for most of the production run from 80 through 96.
BTW, why on earth would you opt for a K5 over the IFS in the Bronco? Sorry, just a personal opinion. I've driven and riden in both models...K5 = a ride like a police cruiser sideways across a cornfield! (Don't ask how I know what that feels like but its NOT nice). But here I go stiring up a very old arguement that refuses to die anyway. Youwill either love the IFS or want to rip it out the minute you get it. Truth is, I wouldn't give mine up if you paid me.
I know that ford calls it trac-loc its all the same concept... anyways I have two friends with k-5's one has a 82 with a stock roll bar on the back, the 1 ton transfer case and a built up 350, no lift kit or anything his is really fun to drive while people are hanging on to the roll bar... it is actually my current project while he is at school... my other friend has a lifted 87 k5 with everything else stock, I helped put the lift kit on and I would never want to do that by myself. My mother owned a 93 bronco before the electrical system **** the bed and we traded it in for a Volvo. So I know what both feel like to drive. I know pretty much the ins and outs of a K-5 now, and I am a ford fan but I also like some Chevy’s just as long as it isn’t their new trucks with IFS. So hate torsion bars. I like driving the k-5's better especially with the stump puller transmission. I still think ford makes a better motor etc, I race my Mark VII with a 5.0. I’m just looking for something for winter, to haul parts around in and maybe do a little off roading in. I have pretty much made up my mind that I am going to get a bronco because chevy didn’t make the good blazer past 91 and all the old ones around here are rusted pretty bad.
Mine has a 9" ford rear with a D44 up front. I tell you, I was dead set against IFS being any good for off road(used to be a jeep owner). Then I got my 1996 F-150 from my dad, and stock with 31" tires it did okay. Now i have my 1985 Bronco with a 5.8L and I am looking forward to making it a good offroad vehicle as well as a daily driver for my girlfriend to go to work in. I guess to me I have had 2 chev's now and both took a dump within a year of buying them and I will never own another bowtie pos again.
