1987 F150 engine swap

LAST EDITED ON 25-Feb-01 AT 06:46 PM (EST)[p]I know this subject has probably been brought up
a million times but I have a dead 302 in my F150 and would
like to put something bigger in it. A friend suggested a
351W. My 302 is fuel injected. What do I need to consider
for this swap..The more info the better as I would like
to know as much as possible before attempting this. Although
I am not entirely a newby to engine swapping, I have not
swapped out anything with injection or computer controls
before so am a bit apprehensive. Forgot to mention it is a
4x4 with 4 speed (granny).

Thanks for any answers.

Hi, welcome to the boards, you will need the computer for the bigger engine and the exhaust y pipe for the 351 for sure maybe some other small items but it shouldn't be to bad if you have a donor truck that you can grab parts from even if its in the scrap yard. John

Yeah, I believe the computer and wiring harness needs to match the 351W. The 351W is about 1 1/2" taller than the 302. Your front accessories will all swap with the addition of a swap bracket that you can get from Ford Motorsports.

I swapped my 302 for a 351W a few weeks ago. You can use your 302 harness from the truck. The 351 will run on the 302 computer and run fairly decent too but not quite 100%. My truck still has a few quirks (high idle, inconsistent performance) but I'm not sure that they're due to the computer alone. My exhaust came from an E350 that drops right in after you remove the angle brace to the tranny crossmember. I didn't install the cat at all because it was full of holes and half the substrate fell out.

Great...Did that 351W drop right onto the original
motor mounts or did you have to do some fabrication
to make new ones??? also Did the swap affect your gearing.
I am considering going with a carbureted version of the
engine, however am not sure about fuel pump probs that
might be created. Did you have to change flywheel,
or have any other problems that cropped up that you didn't
anticipate??

Thanks for the help

The only thing I had to do to drop it in was to change to a set of truck motor mounts since the engine came from a van. I also yanked all the original 351 smog pipes and related junk and replaced them with the much simpler setup that came on the 302. I don't know if all 351's have that much junk on them because mine is a HD engine (came from E350). The swap was very straightforward and I hit no snags. If you can find a complete EFI motor then buy it instead of carbed engine as it will have better driveability in winter (my 87 is a winter truck) and is actually less of a hassle to drop into your already EFI truck.

Loudford: Try swapping the injector leads to match the firing order of your old 302 assuming your using the old distributor, and cumputer. The 351 uses the same firing order as the 302HO but not the regular 302 in the trucks until 93-94 when they switched the trucks all to HO. This might solve your driveablity problems.

These older trucks used batch firing for the injectors, that is to say it is a non-sequential system and there is nothing to be gained by moving injector wires around. Driveability isn't a problem at all with the truck but I think the ignition system could use new wires but I'm only driving it 2 or 3 days a week right now.
