Started cleaning up my door parts and wanted to get your opinion on wear an tear items I should replace on the door latches and window regulator. What should I look for in these parts to make sure they function properly?
Door latches: look for looseness in the star latch and the dovetail, the part that slides onto the striker plates. If you have it in your budget buy new ones, if not enough in budget for two buy the driver's side. If not enough for one, lube the moving parts and use hem and then if they don't work well, buy new ones when budget permits.
.
Window regulator: put a handle on it and work it up and down. Lube the moving parts. Carefully check the splines (or is it spines?). If they are worn then get another one, new or used. Or install a new spline. I've never done it so I don't know whats involved.
You might want to clean up the rollers. Lube them and the thing they slide on, don't don't really roll. Originals are better than the repops.
Thanks for that well written post.the star piece wiggles pretty good and that arm wont really spring back up so maybe it's just better to buy new latches.
As far as the window regulator I'll grab a handle and see how it goes up n down.splines look pretty good on.
Appreciate the help, will post when I test out regulator.
Your parts look like new compared to mine! Mine were all rusty from sitting and had surface rust all over. Some parts were even siezed. But I had extras from a parts truck. Anyway you will be surprised how good they can be again with cleaning and lubing! Putting in new shafts if yours are messed up is no big deal....I wouldn't buy new ones, but I'm cheap.
It is more fun to clean up the original parts and try to make them work good again than buying new ones. The star latch and some other parts can be tightened up somewhat with a little bit of tender loving hammerage. Try it, you just might find it saves some of the parts.
