Primarily just a plow truck now. Went to use it yesterday morning - couldn’t shift out of park and brake lights not working. All worked fine the day before.
Checked all interior fuses with a test light; all good. Nothing in the manual points to a fuse in the engine compartment.
Purchased a new brake shift interlock from the Ford dealer and installed it. Still doesn’t work, although the brake pedal feels normal now (felt real hard with almost no movement before I replaced the switch).
I know I can manually release the lock per the manual, and will do that after checking things over again today.
My question - would burned out brake bulbs cause the shift lock to fail? I haven’t checked the bulbs yet, can’t imagine that would be the case. Plus I doubt both bulbs would have failed at the same time. Just figured I’d ask
If varmits chewed through the brake light wiring, would that trigger the shift lock?

No.

It depends.
Does fuse F31 in the BCM go HOT when the brake pedal is applied?
Have you used a scan tool or equivalent to interrogate the BCM for any fault codes? This thing is not like any previous generation vehicle when it comes to how the lights (and other stuff) are switched. It's basically a mobile computer network.

i’ll have to check the fuse 31 today.
I didn’t check for codes; didn’t think of it since it seemed so “simple” (ie: replace bad switch with new switch). Will check today.
Thanks
edit: just checked codes - P0456 - evap system. Shouldn’t affect the brake switch though. Have an old fuel cap so will see if a new one fixes that.
Sure its the shifter and not the linkage at the transmission?
I had an issue with mine getting all splattered up with wet snow and slush and it froze onto the linkage and I couldn't shift into park once.

definitely the shifter interlock - can release it manually, so will just do that for now because we’re supposed to get about a foot of snow over the next few days. Just won’t have brake lights.
