gear shift from park

On my 1996 Ranger, when I crank up the motor the truck will not shift out of PARK. With truck off, I can turn switch to on position, then shift to neutral to start motor then change gears. How can this be fixed.

The brakelights & the shift lock solenoid are powered from the brake light switch. Check the brake light fuse, if it's OK the most likely problem is a bad brake light switch.
