02 limited 4.6 explorer. truck will not shift out of park. rocked back and forth and turned wheel side to side. i looked inside column by key and noticed a silver pin sticking up not allowwing the shifter mech to slide by. shimmed the plastic piece down to drop pin to allow it to shift but noe there arent any brake lights and it shifts out of park without pressing brake peddle. what part is this and how expensive?
This is a cost saving device to stop the truck from driving when you dont have $$ to fix...
You are going about this all backwards, the safety interlock on the brake pedal (illuminates brake lights and disengages shift lock), needs you attention.
Invert yourself under the dash- knee panel and check the switch and connections at the top of the brake pedal.... Philip
ok- the switch on the pedal operated the mech that i have bypassed?
if the connections are good is the part just bad? what is it called so i can check prices.... thanks!

You shall have to test the switch to confirm if it is BAD or out of adjustment, Use a meter or test light... There are 2 sets of contacts, one for the brake the other for the shift lock solenoid.. Philip
