Stripped hinge thread

Stripped hinge thread

So I got to put cab back onto chassis today and tried to put the passenger side door on, I chased the post threads out thinking they were fine but when I tried to tighten down on the fine thread bolts they are stripped or close to it, the original ones are 5/16” and was wondering has anyone ever gone up one thread size to 3/8” and if so were there any problem trying to do this? Thanks in advance with any help
and information

If you are working on a 48-52, the repop hinge screws may be long enough to put a 5/16-24 nut on the back.

My memory of the exact way the threaded plates are held in is fuzzy, but it is possible to get at the cage built around them, bend up a tab, and pull the plate out for replacement.

Yes, I had to pull my plates out to remove some broken bolts. It’s tight back there, but it can be done.

The truck is a ‘56, not sure if that matters but the nut is welded to the bracket so I guess im
going to be drilling them out and taping them
to the next size which is 3/8”

Man that sticks! Have you tried a thread repair tap and then using a new bolt? It might be worth a shot before redrilling and tapping it out to 3/8.

If that's the nut in question in the photo you have good access to it to remove and weld in a new nut..

That would have been way to easy, unfortunately 5 of the 6 threads on the passenger side are stripped and getting to them are impossible since I already welded the repair panels that’s why I’m thinking it will be easier to tap to the next size which is 3/8”, not sure if a metric would work, will experiment over the weekend, thanks for the suggestion 👍

On 48-52's the screws are tough to find with the correct head that will clear the opposing hinge when closed. Is that an issue on Mid-fifties too?

I think I'd try drilling thru the nuts at 5/16" and put another nut behind them.Not something you need to access more than once.
