Did the ford trucks come with fresh air heaters or recirculating heaters ? How do you tell the difference between the two.? Mine has a two speed fan and you can pull the fan switch **** in or out. I have a custom cab if that makes any difference. Thanks
Here are 2 pictures of my dash control *****. In the manual I just bought said there was two types of heaters. Fresh air and recirculating heater. Wanted to know which one I had and which one was better. Only thing I needed to ask.
The fresh air heater has an under the dash control panel on the right side of the steering wheel as shown in the picture below. The fan speed is controlled by an in-dash switch while the slide levers on the control panel control everything else.
The recirculating style also has an in dash control **** that controls both the fan speed, heater and defroster. This arrangement has both the fan speed and defrost cable on the one ****/switch. Typically the **** bezel has "Pull For Defrost" engraved on it. The fresh air heater takes air directly in from the right side vent plenum. This can also bring in things like bugs, leaves and debris. The recirculating style heater items has a block off plate covering the plenum so that the heated hair comes directly from the cab interior. It is not a bad idea to periodically clean the garbage out of the air vent plenums. That stuff can hold moisture and promote rust.
The heater boxes are basically the same for both styles. The fresh air heater has an extra duct that channels the air from the plenum into the heater core.
Speaking of heater switch, does anyone know where to get a replacement? LMC does not list one for 58-60! I would like to avoid a aftermarket under-dash one.
Since there are two different heaters, there are two different switches (doh).
The above picture shows a standard, recirculating type heater out of a '58 F-100. The switch incorporates a rather long cable that activates the defroster when the **** is pulled. The cable is attached to a flapper style door inside the heater housing that directs air up into the two round defroster ducts which go to the lower windshield. The switches used on the "Fresh Air" heaters do not have the cable. The slide levers on the under dash control panel have cables that take care of operating the defroster.
The fresh air heater switches are usually available NOS on ebay among other sources. The recirculating style heater switches are much harder to find because they are prone to breakage. I am not sure if they are currently reproduced.
